Project summary

How can we improve dairy product quality while reducing losses, methane emissions and antimicrobial resistance, in a context of sustainability, economic profitability and competitiveness for the Canadian dairy sector? These are the issues addressed by Alliance lait.

Four objectives are pursued by this group of researchers:

  1. Food efficiency and the environment: Developing biotherapeutic agents to improve feed efficiency and reduce methane emissions.
  2. Silage and litter management: Design silage inoculants and biological treatments to minimize losses due to contamination and modulate the microbiota of the litter.
  3. Dairy product quality: Develop molecular process control tools to reduce milk and cheese degradation.
  4. Microbial health: Developing strategies to combat foodborne pathogens and reduce antimicrobial resistance through a better understanding of the digestive microbiota.

This research aims to optimize sustainable dairy production, combining quality, health safety and reduced environmental impact.

Expected results

This project aims to support the Canadian dairy industry through scientific and technological advances to improve the sector’s competitiveness. The multidisciplinary approach adopted uses scientific methods and molecular technologies to address the sector’s priorities.

Producers and processors will increase their profits by reducing forage and milk losses caused by silage contamination, while lowering production costs and rejects associated with dairy product degradation.

The results of this research will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, supporting more sustainable production. In addition, they will improve animal welfare, safety and dairy product quality, while combating antimicrobial resistance through accelerated elimination of the genes responsible.
