Prospective study assessing the potential use of dairy co-products

Project summary

The aim of this project is to gain a better understanding of the potential for exploiting milk solids-non-fat (SNF) and dairy co-products in Quebec, and to propose viable solutions. The dairy industry is facing a major challenge: the valorization of SNF and dairy co-products (whey and permeates). These surpluses represent a complex technological, economic and environmental issue, hampering the adoption of solutions by processors.

The aim of this project is to develop techno-economic and environmental scenarios for the valorization of SNG and co-products in Quebec. The research team will map co-product production volumes and zones, identify the best valorization options based on available literature and patents, and conceptualize scenarios adapted to specific industrial and geographical conditions.

The project could lead to the creation of a decision-making tool for dairy companies. This research focuses on improving the profitability and sustainability of dairy plants, reducing their environmental impact, and proposing an integrated approach to developing these untapped resources.

Expected results

The expected results of this research aim to define viable exploitation opportunities for non-fat solids and dairy co-products, adapted to specific industrial requirements. The project also seeks to identify technologies for reducing the ecological footprint associated with these processes, in order to find eco-efficient solutions. A simulation tool will be used to assess the technical, economic and environmental performance of the scenarios envisaged.
